Web-text for social change assignment
The web-text for social change assignment is one that I started developing while teaching at Indiana University (IU) in spring 2020. I implemented the assignment originally in an Advanced Expository Writing Courses which I themed around Public (Digital) Rhetoric and Composition for Social Justice. In spring 2021 I also implemented that assignment in the first-year writing courses that I taught at IU as well. The below web-texts are what students produced over three semesters.
Feel free to use this downloadable assignment sheet in your classes, but please make sure to cite me as the original creator of the assignment.
W350: ADVANCED EXPOSITORY WRITING (SPRING 2020)Shortly after students started working on their web-text group projects in this course, COVID-19 moved us to teach/learn online. With the expected difficulty of conducting their original research (interviews and observations), and with the change of the general mood, I did some quick changes . I gave students the option to continuing to work on their original projects or to work on something related to the life change at the time of Corona. I also gave students the option to work individually or collectively as would better suits their life circumstances. All students but one group chose to work individually on topics related to Corona. One group remained committed to their project about mental health support at Indiana University with a new focus on students' needs after the pandemic.
Some students struggled working on individual topics, therefore, I suggested they organize and copy-edit their classmates projects (only for students who agreed) into an online magazine. The web-text, magazine, below constitutes the work of students who agreed to their work getting published in the magazine. W350: ADVANCED EXPOSITORY WRITING (SPRING 2021) |
